Break the lawn into measurable shapes
Sketch the area and divide it into rectangles, triangles and circles where practical. For a rectangle, multiply length by width; for a triangle, multiply the base by the perpendicular height and divide by two; for a circle, multiply pi by the radius squared. Keep all measurements in metres so the results are in square metres.
Measure garden edges and obstacles rather than guessing from the street. Add the individual areas, then discuss an appropriate cutting and installation allowance with the supplier. Complex curves and narrow sections may require more allowance than a simple rectangle, so do not apply a universal percentage blindly.
Make every quote answer the same questions
A headline price per square metre may describe turf supply only. Ask whether the quote includes delivery, soil preparation, removal of the old lawn, underlay, installation, levelling, clean-up and the first establishment instructions. Confirm the cultivar, quantity, delivery timing and any warranty conditions in writing.
Site access can change the cost. Mention stairs, narrow gates, slopes, parking and the distance from delivery point to installation area before accepting a price. A clear scope lets you compare the complete job rather than discovering that two quotes were never equivalent.
- Draw and label a site plan with all dimensions.
- Calculate each shape separately and total the areas.
- Confirm the exact cultivar and supplied quantity.
- List preparation, underlay, delivery, installation and clean-up separately.
- Check warranty conditions and establishment responsibilities.
Common questions
How much extra turf should I order?
It depends on the layout, curves and cutting required. Give the supplier your measurements and plan, then agree an appropriate allowance for the actual site.
Is the lowest price per square metre the best value?
Not without knowing the scope. Cultivar, turf quality, preparation, materials, delivery, installation and aftercare can make apparently similar quotes very different.
